Fun Job – Wine Sales Rep

I’m always telling people in my Create Your Own Job seminar that you can make a living at just about anything. Even if it’s getting paid to drink wine. In fact, I know a guy we call “wine dude”, who has been doing just that for many years. In college when he was asked what he was going to do for a living, he said he wanted to drink wine and get paid for it. Of course everyone thought he was crazy, but he’s gotten the last laugh. He has been tasting wine, talking about wine and getting paid for it for the past twenty years.

The wine industry is a multi billion dollar worldwide business. When times are good, people drink wine. When times are bad, people drink wine. And there are many different areas you could work in in the business. Wine dude is a sales rep for a wine company. Not only is he knowledgable about the company he represents, but he also has a vast knowledge about wines from around the world in general.

If you like wine and you like people, this may be the perfect job for you. You’ll also need to be a good salesperson. Wine reps do work hard and put in a lot of hours. They also do a lot of traveling, whether it’s to the vineyard where the wine is made, or to the distributors or restaurants they sell to. They are responsible for putting on wine tasting events and promoting their company’s brand through sales and marketing.

A wine rep must be good at networking and relationship building. It’s not just an order taking job. You need to do your homework and constantly stay on top of your game. Learn the latest trends and keep your finger on the pulse of your customers and what they want and need.

One of the best ways to get a job as a wine rep is literally to start at the bottom and work your way up the ladder. That’s how wine dude did it. He learned everything he needed to know either on the job or through extra training and research.

A Fun Job Interview That Leads to a Fun Job

If you’re bored with the typical job search and are looking for a  fun job outside the cubicle. A fun job where you’re actually paid to encourage others to have fun, then today’s your lucky day.

The Westin Kierland Spa and Resort in Scottsdale, AZ didn’t conduct the typical job interview this week. To commemorate International Surfing Day the resort started a competition to fill the full time job of ‘wave master’.

The person picked for the job would have to have a passion for surfing, people, and fun. They would have to be a good teacher and like helping others learn how to surf on the FlowRider, which is a wave simulator. Unlike regular surfing, the FlowRider is a sport for all ages and all experience levels.

The wave master would be responsible for the management of the $2.4 million Kierland FlowRider. In fact, the job requires much more than just surfing and having fun all day. A list of requirements are listed on their job site at http://kierlandwavemaster.com/.

The application process starts with a video submission and an explanation of why you are the perfect person for the job. If you are selected, you’ll go on to the next step, and finally to the surf off event to determine the winner of the position.

The wave master job search goes from June 20th to July 23rd.

Fun Job – Fashion Designer

If you’re creative and like the idea of sketching designs, putting together fabrics, and instructing others on how to put your ideas into action, then a career as a fashion designer may be for you. If you TIVO every episode of Project Runway, can’t wait to see the latest styles before anyone else, and have a subscription to Vogue magazine then a career as a fashion designer might be for you.

80% of all fashion designers are women and 75% of all salaried fashion designers work in New York or California.

The good news is that the median annual average wage is around $65,000. The bad news is that competition for jobs is fierce because there are too many people trying to get in to too few jobs. You also don’t have to have any formal education. On the job training and experience is considered more important than a college degree. And associate’s or a bachelor’s degree in fashion design may give you an advantage though. Experience in sewing, textiles, tailoring, and CAD are also helpful.

Fashion designers often work in teams throughout the process, so being able to get along well with others is a plus. They also need to have a good idea about what consumers are going to want in advance. Of course, that’s not always possible, but a good fashion designer will follow trends and listen to what consumers are saying and what they will be likely to buy, especially since fashion changes constantly.

Clothing manufacturers fall into 3 main categories:

Haute Couture – These are clothes that are made to order for a specific client. The clothes in this category are made from expensive fabrics and accessories and usually take a long time to complete. They are also usually sewn by hand. Fit and quality are more important than cost. For haute couture customers cost is no object.

Ready to wear – Ready to wear is kind of a cross between haute couture and mass market clothing. They aren’t as expensive as haute couture and not specifically made for a single customer, but they are still made from quality fabrics and are also quite expensive.

Mass Market – The mass market is by far the largest market. These clothes are made of cheaper fabric and are introduced to the market after ready to wear. Designers tend to wait a season before coming out with the mass market versions of a brand.

If a career as a fashion designer sounds exciting to you there are plenty of fashion schools around or you could get a degree in fashion design. Your best bet is to get a job as an intern and start learning the ropes hands-on and get a head start in experience.

Fun Job – Camp Counselor

Remember kayaking on the lake, hiking through mountain trails, or telling stories by a campfire as you roast marshmallows? If you like working in the great outdoors and you like being around kids, maybe a fun job as a camp counselor would be perfect for you.

Besides the fact that you will be making a positive difference in kid’s lives, you get to relive the fun of the camp experience yourself. You’ll get to work outside in a beautiful, peaceful setting, away from the stress of the city. You can also meet new friends, create lasting memories, and build relationships.

On top of building relationships, you will be building your resume and learning new skills. If you’re a college student with an eye on a career in child development, athletics, sports management, theater or dance then being a camp counselor is a good way to get a head start on your resume in those departments and more training and skills that you can learn on the job.

Part of what camp counselors do is to lead kids in recreational activities like hiking, swimming, arts and crafts, tennis, boating, music and games. Camp counselors are responsible for supervising the daily life of the campers and being responsible for them at all times. They are also responsible for enforcing the rules.

Camp counselors should be mature and responsible and capable of handling a group of kids or teenagers. This is a good chance for them to learn new leadership skills.

The job is seasonal and the hours can include nights and weekends, so some flexibility is required. Counselors will often have some time off to enjoy their surroundings. They can go hiking or play tennis with the other counselors or just enjoy the relaxation.

There is usually a fair amount of turnover as former camp counselors move on to other jobs. They are more likely to sign on again for the following summer season if they are thought of more as educators than camp counselors, and if they are more involved in learning the kinds of skills they will need for future employment.

The pay may be slightly lower than normal, but many people like the chance to work a fun job in the great outdoors where they get to learn new skills, meet new people, and build up a resume after college.

So, if you’re looking for a fun, seasonal job where you can stay active, get your resume in early.

Fun Jobs – Clown

From Bozo to Ronald McDonald. From Emmett Kelly to Red Skelton, all the world loves a clown. If you like making adults and kids laugh and have what it takes, you might want to think about a fun job like being a clown. Where else could you go to work dressed in big baggy pants, big floppy shoes, a wig, colorful makeup and a red nose? What a great job where you get to make people laugh all day! And you get to create your own clown character.

The first thing you’ll want to do is to go to clown school. Yes, clown school. That’s where you’ll learn the skills you’ll need, like makeup, juggling, magic, making balloon animals, improv, and mime. You’ll learn about wigs and costumes too. There are plenty of books on the subject, like world renowned clown teacher Alan Clay’s “Angels Can Fly – A Modern Clown User’s Guide”. Clay runs a clown school in New Zealand and has performed all over the world.

Clowning is like acting, you can only read so much in a book before you have to just get out and do it. You’ll need to create your own clown personality. You can choose to use a funny voice or not. You might not even want to speak at all. You’ll need to develop a perfect balance between being clumsy and graceful at the same time. Clowns walk and talk differently. They know how to make it seem like it’s natural clumsiness when it’s really under control. Come up with a consistent set of traits that you can use that are unique to your clown personae. There are funny clowns and ones that are more serious. Figure out which type suits you best.

Practice every chance you get with family and friends. Get some experience working around kids at birthday parties. Practice interacting with a crowd. You have to get used to taking big risks and doing things others might be afraid to do. Watch some episodes of Red Skelton. Go watch other clowns in action. Talk to them and get their advice.

There are many different types of clowns. You could work for a regular circus or one like Cirque du Soleil. There are Shriner clowns and clowns that work in hospitals and for kid’s birthday parties. Corporations hire clowns.  And if you don’t get a regular clown job, you’ll have to get used to the hustle of always looking for work, just like any other artist.

There’s more to being a clown than just making funny faces and wearing a costume. You also have to have it in your heart to be a clown. But for those who hate being stuck in an office cubicle all day it sounds like the perfect FUN JOB.

Fun Jobs – Chocolatier

I really believe that you should work a job that you love. Now, I’m not a big chocolate fan, but a lot of people are. And just the thought of being able to eat chocolate for a living would be a dream come true. A chocolatier is someone that makes or sales chocolate.

Like most jobs, you will probably have to start out at the bottom. A starting salary for a chocolatier isn’t great, but someone at the top of their career could make $90-100,000. You will need to be able to work well under pressure since you’ll tend to be incredibly busy during the holiday rush.

You don’t necessarily need to go to a culinary school, but you will have to apprentice under an established chocolatier. This will be your best training anyway. You’ll quickly figure out if this is the right “fun job” for you.
